ECM

An engine control unit (ECU) is a specialized electronic processor that is commonly referred to as an engine control module (ECM).

The Electronic Control Module (ECM) is a vital part of any modern engine, using data gathered from the cooling system, intake, exhaust, and other components to deliver commands. It controls ignition timing, wastegate pressure, throttle position, and fuel injection timing. This technology has become increasingly important in recent years for automakers seeking to optimize performance and efficiency.

PCM

The powertrain control module (PCM) is an integral part of a vehicle’s performance. It controls all functions related to the powertrain, from gear changes to transmission control and engine management. By coordinating every task digitally, PCMs can increase fuel economy and offer improved power delivery.

For instance, when shifting gears, the PCM can preemptively lower the throttle to achieve smoother transitions.

2 Differences Between A PCM And ECM

1. What They Control

As mentioned above, the ECM only controls engine timing, cooling, fuel : air ratios, and the exhaust. However, a PCM can do everything an ECM does but also coordinates with sensors to control the transmission.

2. Modernization

A good chunk of modern vehicles have moved away from the traditional two-computer system (ECM and TCM) to just one, a Powertrain Control Module (PCM). This started happening in 1996 because the PCM acts as an independent unit that manages all of the car’s systems. For cars with manual transmission, they only held onto an Engine Control Module because it was sufficient enough to control the transmission functions.
